Reimagine ageing and find purpose
| |
| |
"Too often ageing is seen as a problem to be solved. COTA SA wants to highlight the opportunities and possibilities that come with ageing and how finding a purpose is part of ageing well" says COTA SA Chief Executive, Miranda Starke.
In the lead-up to International Day for Older Persons COTA SA is encouraging older South Australians to “reimagine ageing” and find purpose. We will be hosting an event on 27 September that will bring together around 200 diverse voices to drive conversations on reimagining the way people think about, act on, and embrace getting older, with a focus on ageing well by finding a purpose.
Also of importance within this week, is Ageism Awareness Day on 7 October. This day is an opportunity to highlight the negative impact of ageism on our community. | |

Submission: Recycling of soft plastics | |

COTA SA recently welcomed the opportunity to comment on issues relating to the recycling of soft plastics and other recyclable materials as part of the inquiry being conducted by the Select Committee of the Legislative Council.
COTA SA views the issue of recycling soft plastics and related materials as one part of a suite of measures that can mitigate the impact of climate change and the wasteful use of resources and their embodied energy. | |

A year of free public transport | |

“COTA SA advocated for free public transport for Seniors Card holders and we are delighted to see such strong uptake which indicates how important this is for older people in our community." said COTA SA Chief Executive Miranda Starke.
Last week, Miranda was pleased to join Tom Koutsantonis MP, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, to highlight the strong uptake since public transport became free all day every day to Seniors Card holders.

In a snapshot, 67% of respondents rate themselves in being in good/somewhat good health, 13% were neutral, and 18% felt they were in poor/somewhat poor health. For most, being in good health means the ability to live life well by continuing to be active and independent (33%) | |

Climate Change Group: Switching from Gas to Electric | |
Burning gas in our homes to cook food or heat air and water has become a contentious issue: Gas is an expensive, polluting fossil fuel, and there’s mounting evidence to suggest it’s also bad for our health. Be part of one of the biggest conversations on addressing climate change that Australia has ever had! If you’re interested in having a say on how our state responds to climate change, this is your chance. | | | |
You just need about 5-10 people, it could be family or friends, colleagues, social or sporting clubs or any other group. Everyone in South Australia is encouraged to host or participate in a Community Climate Conversation and submit their feedback before 30 November. | |

Fleurieu Neighbourhood Network | |

Morning tea at McCracken
Fleurieu Neighbourhood Network (FNN) members and other older people in the area joined Steering Committee members Marilyn, Juliet, Derek and Andy, and staff Jodie, Diana and Germaine. They all enjoyed each other’s company over a lovely morning tea last week. With a glorious view over the golf course, the group talked about what the FNN had done to date, and about future plans in response to community consultation.
The Committee were delighted that some people expressed interest in joining the Steering Committee or volunteering to staff a new Fleurieu Hub. This will be set up as a drop-in service to talk with older residents and give information and encouragement to join in with social activities and groups and to access services that help them to connect with others and age well. | |

COTA SA’s Fleurieu Neighbourhood Network is seeking volunteers for its new pop-up Hubs at Victor Harbor Library and Goolwa Library.
We are seeking volunteers that can chat with older people and give information about local activities, groups, events and support services, and support them to connect with our wonderful local Fleurieu community.

Thank you: Consultation – Foundations of the new Aged Care Act | |
A big thank you to everyone who took the time to participate in the recent OPAN and COTA Australia consultation on the future of the Aged Care Act whether by attending an in-person consultation, joining an online event or completing one of the two surveys.
From Hervey Bay, QLD to Victor Harbour, SA – 582 people registered across the 12 face-to-face events, 1,944 people responded to the survey about the Funding Principles (designed by COTA SA's Plug-in team) and a further 3,348 people register for the 2 online events. 52 people living in residential aged care facilities were also consulted directly to hear their views on the proposed Statement of Rights, complaints process, and supported decision-making model.
