Governor's Multicultural Awards 2023

As you may have read in our past edition, COTA SA's Strength for Life program was delighted to be a finalist for the Governor's Multicultural Awards 2023. Congratulations to all the finalists and to the winners who were announced at the awards presentation at Government House on 1 March.

While COTA SA's Strength for Life program did not win for our category, the Community Sector, it was an absolute honour to be recognised as a finalist alongside organisations doing fantastic work in many areas of the multicultural community.

New Advance Care Directive materials

This week is Advance Care Planning Week, so now is a good time to think about your preferences and communicate them with your loved ones to ensure they are respected. An important way to plan ahead is creating an Advance Care Directive (ACD) which empowers you to make clear legal arrangements for your future health care, end of life, preferred living arrangements and other personal matters.

This month SA Health released their new ACD materials and COTA SA, through our Plug-in team, were pleased to participate in the consultation around developing these. We spoke to older people who shared what they would like to see in the new materials, which included feedback that they should be simpler, clearer and easier to understand. In addition, the new printed ACD kit is now free (previously $5) which was a change we advocated for. You can pick up your ACD kit at selected libraries or download them from the website.

Fuel discounts for seniors card holders

In good news, seniors card holders are now eligible to access discounted fuel, saving 4 cents per litre at participating United service stations. This joins other initiatives easing cost of living pressures and continue having the freedom of travel, such as the free metropolitan public transport all day, every day which we welcomed in 2022.

In the weeks since the discount became available more than 24,000 older South Australians have signed up to receive their fuel discount card. Click below to read more about eligibility requirements and how to apply.
